Spectra

The spectra indicate how much "energy" or variation there is on different scales. More power on smaller scales, for example, indicates that the forecast fields have a more small-scale structure. The graphic below shows the power spectra for different variables. Observe, for example, what happens to the spectra of the ML models and the ensemble mean with increasing lead time (700hPa specific humidity is a good example). On many fields, there is a marked drop-off in power, showing increased blurring.
